Fly Fishing Casting – The Correct Grip

A number of times on this site we have mentioned that all the really good fly fishing casting technique that you will see on the river will be from fishermen who are relaxed and calm. As a fly fishing beginner you need to focus on this and work on being relax rather than tense when you are casting.

Getting that relax casting posture starts with the way you grip the rod. If this is wrong and stressed then you will have little or no chance of having a relaxed and flowing casting technique.

So what you need to aim for is a gentle but firm grip, with some space between your palm and your fingers when you wrap your hand around the rods handle. The best way to illustrate this is by showing a video.

I hope that having watched this video you can see that it is possible to keep a relaxed but firm grip on the rod when you are casting your line. Get the right grip perfected and you will be able to stay in the river fishing for longer.
